To start off I am not against owning guns, most of the men in my family hunt and have several different rifles and hand guns.
I do not how ever understand why anyone other than military or law enforcement NEEDS to own assault weapons.
I would vote for a law restricting the sale of them to the civilian population, you don't need an AR 15, AK47 or anything like that to hunt or protect you home and family.
I do believe that most of the people that own assault weapons are good people and have no intension of going out and shooting up the world, but they also have to admit that in the wrong hands those weapons can do more damage that your average single shot weapon so why make them readily available to the general population. personaly my weapon of choice for home protection would be a shotgun, you don't have to be that acurate in and emergency situation just point and pull the trigger.
And yes i know that some of the bad guys will still get them but it would be a start.
